“Binding the Sides” The first in the Mahara Series. Now this piece is interesting to me at least in that it was the first i sculpted here in the Coromandel with particular “energies” in mind although i admit these developed only as i created the hole......... The Hole
Yes that hole. I had in my mind the “as yet undefined”, definable nature of creation....... hence the hole. The body of the stone becomes the definition of creation, as yet to be created into some reality or other,  but let us not write it in stone :-) This side involves various Koru, potential in the process of definition within creation, and on the other side are more energetic forms, possibly even those that become the land, this peninsular even..... So far there were two sides, like a coin maybe, or life even - that which defines and yet it is defined by........ Edge on the sculpture needed a binding element(al) to hold a larger macrocosm, a bringing together of the two sides into a more defined reality. As i started sculpting the figure the top of the stone reminded me of the hills around here and it was at this point the Mahara Series became a reality and path.
Some sculpting photos for your perusal. The plaiting across the top is indicative of conscious detail involved, the planned and purposefully creative in a wider sense and maybe the influence of human consciousness within creation over and above that of the sculptor
